The Missouri State Highway Patrol said searchers found the body of a missing 3-year-old girl in a small pond near her home in Mountain Grove, Missouri.

Vivian Fitzenrider, 3, disappeared about 6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 27, near 13th and Oakview Lane. Investigators said her parents reported her was missing after they were unable to find her for about half an hour, KY3 reported.

Nearly 300 volunteers and specialized dogs showed up to help with the search Tuesday night before her body was found around 7:10 a.m. on Wednesday. Aug. 28.

Her home is about 200 yards from the pond. Investigators said she was found about five yards from the edge of the pond in water about three feet deep. There were slide marks on the bank, but it’s unclear if those were from Vivian or from the volunteers in the search.

Sgt. Jeff Kinder of the Missouri Highway Patrol said it appears that Vivian wandered off.

“There will be an autopsy performed and also a child fatality review board will look at that,” Kinder said. “We are involved in the investigation now.”

An investigation into the circumstances surrounding Vivian’s death is being conducted by investigators of the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Division of Drug and Crime Control, the Mountain Grove Police Department, and the Wright County Sheriff’s Department.
