The Columbia Police Department is seeking the public’s help in identifying the body of an infant.

The body was found shortly before noon Thursday, Aug. 15, at the edge of a parking lot at McKnight Tire, Assistant Chief Jeremiah Hunter said in a statement. The baby appeared to be less than a year old.

“As a parent myself, this is very difficult,” Hunter said, according to the Columbia Daily Tribune. “It is a very difficult situation for everyone involved, including the investigating officers and detectives and the community as a whole. Our investigation will be the voice of this baby and we need your help.”

Hunter did not provide information on the infant’s gender or the length of time the child might have been dead, the Columbia Daily Tribune reported.

Hunter said the cause of death has not been determined.

If you have any information about this death, contact the Columbia Police Department at 573-874-7423 or CrimeStoppers at 573-875-TIPS to remain anonymous.
