President Joe Biden was chastised by Catholic Archbishop Joseph Naumann on Friday, June 3, for submitting a federal budget plan that included direct taxpayer support for elective abortions.

According to the Church Militant, Naumann, who chairs the pro-life committee of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, asked Congress to reject Biden’s plan and protect unborn babies.

The chairman of the pro-life committee called on lawmakers to keep the Hyde Amendment in any federal budget proposal and “work toward a budget that truly builds up the common good of all.”

In his remarks on May 28, Naumann said, “There are aspects to President Biden’s budget proposal that will assist vulnerable people. However, Congress must reject the administration’s proposal to subsidize the deaths of unborn children.”

“No member of our great nation is weaker, more vulnerable, or less protected, than the child in the womb,” he said.

The Hyde Amendment, a decades-old bipartisan measure that bans taxpayer funding for elective abortions in Medicaid, is eliminated in Biden’s 2021 budget proposal. The life-saving amendment has had strong support from the public, including support from President Biden, but the billion-dollar abortion industry now wants it to be repealed.

“For nearly half a century, the Hyde Amendment and related provisions have protected taxpayers from funding most abortions. These policies have broad support from Democrats and Republicans,” Naumann issued a statement in response.

“Taxpayer-funded abortion represents a failure to serve women in their maternity by funding despair and death instead of hope and life,” the archbishop stated.

He said the Hyde Amendment has “protected millions of unborn babies and mothers in difficult circumstances from the tragedy of abortion.”

According to the Charlotte Lozier Institute, the amendment has saved the lives of an estimated 2.5 million babies since 1976, including roughly 60,000 each year.

Naumann claimed in May that Catholic politicians who support abortions are “creating scandal by encouraging others to do evil.” He also blasted Biden for removing prohibitions on taxpayer support for the procurement of aborted baby body parts for scientific study in April.

According to Marjorie Dannenfelser—president of the Susan B. Anthony List, Biden’s budget would offend the consciences of the vast majority of Americans.

“For more than four decades, the Hyde family of pro-life policies has kept American taxpayers out of the abortion business, with Hyde itself saving nearly 2.5 million lives,” Dannenfelser stated. “The Biden budget could put longstanding, bipartisan pro-life amendments on the chopping block, and Congress must fight back. We encourage our allies to be tireless in fighting to preserve the common ground Hyde principle and to reject any budget that omits vital pro-life protections.”
