Former top U.S. counterintelligence official William Evanina helped thwart the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) attempt to collect Americans’ DNA through CCP Virus testing, according to a CBS report. However, he stated that the CCP has long been stealing this type of data and the extent is overwhelming.
“Foreign powers can collect, store, and exploit biometric information from COVID tests,” stated Evanina, former director of the National Counterintelligence and Security Center (NCSC) of the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI).
Evanina has a 31-year career in government, 24 years at the FBI and the last 6 years he was the director of counterintelligence. Last week, Evanina announced his resignation.
BGI, one of the world’s largest Chinese biotech firms, offered to run testing for the CCP Virus in laboratories in Washington, New York, and California when the first outbreak of the virus occurred in the United States.
Evanina believes the CCP is trying to harvest Americans’ DNA to win a race for control of the world’s biodata.
“This shows the nefarious mindset of the Communist Party of China, to take advantage of a worldwide crisis like COVID,” Evanina said. “We put out an advisory to not only every American, but to hospitals, associations, and clinics. Knowing that BGI is a Chinese company, do we understand where that data’s going?”
All Chinese companies must have a Chinese Communist Party delegate within their management. Private ownership in China does not exist and the vast majority of these large companies are forced to share their data with the government.
While the use of biodata can be useful for developing specific drugs and treatments, and many companies do so locally, biodata has become a luxury good, which could cause serious problems for a country’s national security and economy.
When a foreign force possesses your DNA and other personal data, it can know your past, your future. By analyzing the data, it can anticipate what kind of medicine you would need and monopolize the industry for that drug or treatment.
“From a long-term existential cost to our nation, do we want to do that? Do we want to have another nation systematically eliminate our health care services? That’s what’s happening,” a concerned Evanina pointed out.
The former counterintelligence director also alerted people to the use of services of genealogy companies, which use a test to find out what kind of ancestry a person has.
“It’s your past and your future as well as your children’s future. It’s very risky and I think the unknown is probably the riskiest part,” Evanina added.
According to Evanina, these Chinese companies have been investing millions of dollars in U.S. biotech companies to gain access to health data and American technology.
On Feb. 10, 2020, the FBI announced that a group of Chinese hackers managed to penetrate the database of Equifax, a credit reporting company. According to the report, the hackers stole the personal data of more than half of all Americans.
“You have probably five or six health care companies the last five years who have been, I would say, penetrated, exfiltrated, hacked by China,” Evanina asserted. “Current estimates are that 80% of American adults have had all of their personally identifiable information stolen by the Communist Party of China.”
