Baker Mayfield of the Cleveland Browns paid tribute to a US service member killed in a terrorist attack in Afghanistan last month.
Maxton Soviak, a native of Berlin Heights, was killed on Aug. 26 in Kabul’s Hamid Karzai International Airport’s Abbey Gate during a suicide bombing attack. He was one of thirteen service members who died in the airport bombing, News5Cleveland reported.
Before the Taliban gained control of Afghanistan, Soviak was on a mission to evacuate Americans and allies from the country.
There was a public parade when Soviak’s body arrived home on Sept. 8. Then, on Sept. 13, he was laid to rest.
Mayfield paid tribute to Soviak in a unique way, reaching out to custom cleat designer Marcus Rivero and working on a project in his honor.
The cleats were designed with the help of “Sols by Sir” artist Marcus Rivero who has collaborated with some of the biggest names in professional sports to help paint cleats and shoes.
Soviak is depicted in his Navy uniform, with “Rest In Peace Navy Corpsman Maxton Soviak” on the cleats.
According to the United States Navy, Soviak enrolled on Sept. 26, 2017, and graduated from Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Illinois, before being assigned to the 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division in Sept. 2020 according to Fox News.
“He was excited about the opportunities the Navy would offer him and planned to make the Navy a career. We are incredibly proud of his service to our country,” the Navy said.
