Authorities in New Mexico and New York want information from actor Alec Baldwin’s cellphone as they are investigating the fatal shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins in October on the set of the movie “Rust.”
The New Mexico First Judicial District Attorney’s Office and the Santa Fe Sheriff’s Office are “actively working” with the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department in New York and Baldwin’s lawyers to get materials on his phone to serve the probe Reuters reported, citing a press release.
Some weeks earlier, the Santa Fe Sheriff’s Office received a search warrant to seize Baldwin’s iPhone to examine text messages, emails, and other information in the device.
A detective said she sought the search warrant for Baldwin’s phone after voluntarily requesting it and “was instructed to acquire a warrant.”
The affidavit said suspects, victims, and witnesses “often make or receive telephone calls and/or messages before, during and/or after the commission of crime(s). Such information, if it exists, may be material and relevant to this investigation.”
New York Post cited the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department reported that the 63-year-old actor had not turned his phone over to New Mexico cops.
“The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office has received a request from the Santa Fe, NM authorities requesting assistance in obtaining Alec Baldwin’s phone,” Sergeant Paul Spinella said.
“This request has been forwarded to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office to work out the differences in laws between NM and NY. As this is an ongoing investigation, that is all the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office can report at this time,” he said.
In his affidavit, Baldwin has said that the revolver he was carrying went off during rehearsal last October, firing a live round that killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. He said he did not know how a live round got onto the set.
The actor said he never pulled the trigger and denied responsibility for the shooting.
A New Mexico prosecutor said some people who handled guns on the set might face criminal charges over the case.
