New York Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is again at the center of controversy after her remarks at a press conference Thursday, June 3. She recommended that the United States should “stop building” prisons if the goal is to reduce the inmate population and suppress violent crime.

New York Democrats, including Ocasio-Cortez, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, and Rep. Jamaal Bowman, called on Congress to allocate $400,000 to a program called “Stand Up To Violence,” which seeks to address gun violence through counseling and community outreach, Fox News reported.

During the press conference, Rep. Cortez said, “It is not acceptable that we use prisons as garbage cans for human beings. We need to treat people and see them as human beings,” said Ocasio-Cortez. “If we want to reduce violent crime, if we want to reduce the number of people in our jails, the answer is to stop building more of them.”

Instead of condemning the rise in violent crime across the country, Ocasio-Cortez idealizes a lawless, authority-less society. In the last year, homicides in the United States increased by 33%, and 63 of the 66 largest police jurisdictions experienced an uptick in at least one category of violent crime.

“The answer to our problems is to make sure we build more hospitals, pay organizers, give people mental health care and health care in general, employment, and so on. We’re looking to support communities, not throw them away.”

Behind Cortez’s words, which sound logically appealing, lies the leftist discourse. In accordance with the Marxist theory, it seeks to release thousands and thousands of dangerous criminals from prisons while promoting the defunding of police forces. In addition, there seems to be an objective to create a state of chaos and break the U.S. capitalist system from the ground up.

The left continues to criticize law and order at every opportunity. It constantly seeks mechanisms to eliminate funding for law enforcement agencies, using arguments that are weak yet appealing to voters’ ears.

In March, Rep. Ilhan Omar and Democrats called on Biden to reject federal contracts with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Such Initiatives are seen all over the country. Some of them are stopped thanks to the resistance of the most conservative sectors, but others manage to prosper. Take the case of California, where the leftist Democrats led by its governor Gavin Newsom, announced the early release of tens of thousands of inmates, including violent and recidivists. Among the 76,000 eligible for discharge are at least 20,000 life inmates, Fox News reported.

Prison officials say the goal is to reward inmates who seek to better themselves, while critics say the move will endanger society at large.

The same was true of the leftist Black Lives Matter, who focused on budget reductions for police forces in several U.S. cities under the pretext of racial equality and prosperity for black citizens. Many cities accepted the budget reduction. The consequences in a few months were remarkable, with an exponential increase in crime rates, shootings, and murders.
