A child was critically injured after being burned inside her Brooklyn school on Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 16, officials said.
New York Police said the 9-year-old girl was found inside a bathroom at Excellence Girls Charter School Elementary Academy on Monroe just after 2:30 p.m, according to CBSNewYork.
She claimed she found a lighter in a bathroom stall and accidentally set her uniform on fire, police said. A teacher across the hall heard her screams. She along with the help of others used a jacket to smother the flames.
The young girl suffered burns to her upper body. She was taken to Cornell Medical Center in critical condition.
The school released the following statement:
“Our focus is on supporting the student and her family, and our school community. We are working with the authorities and will continue to communicate with and support our families and students.”
The incident remains under investigation.
