A 9-year-old girl was killed Wednesday evening, Aug. 14, when she was caught in a gang-related shooting at an apartment in Old East Dallas, police said.
The shooting happened at around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Roseland Townhomes in the 3500 block of Munger Avenue.
Dallas police said someone was targeting a tenant at the complex. The suspects knocked on the door of an apartment of that person, but when nobody came out, the suspects walked around to the back.
The shooters then fired into the building but targeted the wrong apartment and struck the 9-year-old girl, police said.
She was transported to Baylor University Medical Center where she later died.
People in the apartment complex said the little girl was well-known in the community.
Kea Westbrook, of the nonprofit Behind Every Door, saw the girl often at the Roseland Community Center where she works. She called the girl a firecracker, full of life, and a big personality who took over a room.
“Today, one of these kids will not be able to walk in what we believed God had for her,” Westbrook said. “But we’ll keep showing up and we’re praying for this family.”
Police said they believed the shooting was gang-related.
Police have not released a description of any suspects or the vehicle they were driving. No arrests have been made in the shooting.
