On Jan. 31 a 73-year-old man from California died after being severely beaten by the man whom he shared a hospital room with, police announced Monday, Feb. 10.

Francisco Sanchez-Reyes, of Long Beach, was brutally beaten at the College Medical Center by Reginald Daniel Panthier, 37, of Long Beach, according to the Long Beach Police Department.

Sanchez-Reyes sustained major injuries to his upper torso. He was then taken to another hospital in critical condition.

He died on Sunday, Feb. 9, from his injuries.

His son, Ramon Sanchez, set up a GoFundMe page to help cover expenses related to this heinous crime.

“The neurosurgeons at the hospital … said that our dad had multiple and extensive bleeding throughout his brain and they couldn’t save him. … Our hearts are broken as he left us unexpectedly!” Sanchez said in the GoFundMe page.

Panthier was charged with assault with a deadly weapon that is not a firearm, and producing great bodily harm against Sanchez-Reyes. He was held in the Long Beach City Jail on $1 million bail.

Detectives plan to discuss amending Panthier’s charges with the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office this week now that the victim, Sanchez-Reyes, has died, according to police.

Panthier is scheduled to appear at Long Beach Superior Court on Thursday.
