One of the two girls critically burned in a parking lot fire outside a Walmart in Fridley, on Tuesday morning, Aug. 6, has died.

Fridley Police said the blaze somehow sparked from a white van outside the store at around 7:15 a.m. The flames quickly spread to nearby vehicles, including a minivan with two young sisters inside. Their mother was shopping inside the store when the fire began.

Police said two girls, ages 6 and 9, suffered burns and injuries due to smoke inhalation.

The Anoka County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the 6-year-old child died from her injuries. The 9-year-old is still fighting for her life.

The owner of the van that initially caught fire, 70-year-old Roberto Lino Hipolito, was arrested and booked into the Anoka County Jail on probable cause negligent fires.

The man in custody has not been charged. The State Fire Marshal is still investigating the cause of the fire.
