Fifty Republican representatives in the House sent a letter Thursday, Sept. 10 to the Justice Department, addressed to Attorney William Barr, expressly requesting an investigation of individuals or groups that are financing or organizing the civil unrest that has been going on in the United States for several months.
Rep. Ken Buck (R-Colo.) was chosen to lead the group.
“We write to share our deep concerns regarding the ongoing violence that has gripped American cities and threatened the rule of law across our nation,” the letter reads.
“ANTIFA and other left-wing anarchist groups have unleashed a barrage of totalitarian attacks on our country in recent months, including accosting a sitting U.S. Senator, hijacking peaceful rallies, organizing armed riots, destroying property, burning buildings, stealing livelihoods, and spreading hate,” the note goes on to say.
Later, Buck wrote a separate statement, “ANTIFA and other far-left anarchist groups have wreaked havoc on our nation for far too long. Americans deserve to feel safe and secure in their own communities. It is time that AG Barr and the DOJ take action to investigate and prosecute the groups responsible for these violent riots. I am proud to lead this effort with my colleagues to put a stop to these coordinated attacks that have subverted our system of government and way of life.”
A week before this letter was sent from Congress, Department of Homeland Security (DHS) acting Secretary Chad Wolf said the Justice Department had already begun an investigation into the organization of the violent protests.
As Breitbart put it, Wolf told Fox News’s Tucker Carlson last week that the Justice Department is investigating the heads of organizations and individuals who are funding the rioters to “move around the country. “It’s something I’ve talked to the AG personally about, and I know that they are working on it,” Wolf told Carlson.
As Wolf continued to state during the program, there were approximately 300 arrests made nationwide for civil unrest during the protests that began in late May.
In his comments, Wolf also targeted Democratic governors when speaking about the riots. “Really the cause of all this is local officials, state officials not taking this seriously enough from day one. When there’s violence in your community, you need to restore law and order right away. (…) They need to bring that law and order back to their streets so that the residents of those cities can feel safe as they go about their business every day.”
“But again, this administration, this president is committed to holding individuals accountable. I think, once folks start to realize that if you want to riot, you want to loot, you want to do some of these other criminal acts that we see around this country, there’s going to be consequences for that. And we’re going to—we’re going to continue to move down that road,” Wolf concluded.
