Preston Satterthwaite, a 5-year-old boy in Virginia spontaneously recited the Pledge of Allegiance in front of the U.S. flag with such solemnity and patriotism that the video became viral.
Mike Satterthwaite, the father, explained in a Fox & Friends interview published Sept. 16 the circumstances that preceded his son’s noble demonstration.
It all began when father and son raised the flag for July 4 and Mike explained to Preston about respect for that national symbol.
“As we were installing it [the American Flag], I was explaining the importance of why we respect the flag and how we could never let it hit the ground,” Satterthwait said.
Days later the flag appeared on the ground apparently because of an act of vandalism and this annoyed the child to tears.
As a solution Jessica, the mother, proposed to install a surveillance camera connected to the internet to watch what might happen to the flag, but what they caught with the system was much more pleasant: they saw Preston standing in front of the flag reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.
The patriotic demonstration took place after father and son returned from a bicycle ride and the child did so spontaneously.
Moreover, during the interview Preston recited the Pledge of Allegiance again, explaining that he had learned it in his kindergarten.
