A Massachusetts father is facing criminal charges after his 5-year-old son allegedly brought a bag of heroin to kindergarten and told a teacher he turns into Spider-Man when he tastes it.
Benny Garcia, 29, of Holyoke was arrested on an active warrant Thursday, Nov. 14, after police were notified about the incident at Lawrence School.
He faces charges of drug possession and reckless endangerment of a child.
Garcia’s son showed the bag to some friends and later told the teacher that “when he eats or tastes the powder,” he turns into Spider-Man, Assistant District Attorney Matthew Green said during the arraignment streamed by WWLP.
Holyoke police officers were called to the school around 11 a.m. Thursday. The boy was taken by ambulance to a local hospital and determined to be unharmed. Police contacted the boy’s mother to search her apartment. Officers found Garcia sleeping on a bed with other bags of white powder underneath him. As he was handcuffed, other bags fell from his body, according to police.
Prosecutors said police found over 200 bags of heroin in the living room of their apartment. When officers told Garcia about the situation with his son at school, he reportedly became “very emotional.”
Garcia will be held without bail until his hearing scheduled for Nov. 20.
