Reality star Josh Duggar was arrested by the U.S Marshals Service in Arkansas on Thursday, April 29, and was charged over child pornography ownership the following day.
Duggar made a virtual appearance via a Zoom meeting with the federal jury of the U.S. District Court on Friday due to Covid-19 safety measurements. Allegedly, he was accused of two charges with one count of receiving child pornography and one count of child pornography possession, People reported.
The reality star was delivered to Washington County jail as he was arrested and would remain there until the next bond hearing. He was detained due to findings in 2019 that Josh downloaded and stored sexual material online, which involved children of 12 years old younger, a press release detailed.
Duggar’s attorneys, including Justin Gelfand, Travis Story, and Greg Payne, released a joint statement stating that their client had asserted his innocence with both the charges.
“Josh Duggar has been charged in a two-count indictment. He has pled not guilty to both charges, and we intend to defend this case aggressively and thoroughly,” his attorneys’ statement read. “In this country, no one can stop prosecutors from charging a crime. But when you’re accused, you can fight back in the courtroom—and that is exactly what Josh intends to do.”
If the court finds him guilty of the charges, Duggar faces a jail term of up to 20 years, plus a fine of up to $250,000 for each count.
According to People, Josh has had a complicated history of molestation accusations. He was investigated in 2006 for inappropriate behaviors with five underage girls when he was a teenager, which prompted a public apology from the star during the middle of May 2015. Both of his sisters, now in their twenties, also came forward as past victims.
Additionally, in 2015 Josh also publicly admitted infidelity and pornography addiction on Ashley Madison, a website designed to encourage cheating on your spouse.
If the reality star is granted bail, U.S Chief Magistrate Judge Erin L. Wiedemann said, that he should be in a neighborhood where there are no young children around.
