A 14-year-old student was detained Thursday morning, Aug. 29, after carrying a weapon to school at Westerville North High School.

Principal Kurt Yancey wrote in a letter to parents that a dad had contacted the school with worries about his child, concerned that the student may have a weapon.

Then the student was removed from the class. The principal said a school resource officer took possession of a loaded, small-caliber handgun in the front pocket of a pair of pants that the student was wearing under his jeans when he searched for the student.

The student was charged illegal conveyance on school property and carrying a concealed weapon, a fifth-degree crime.
