Authorities said a South Carolina teenager with special needs died after being left in a hot vehicle for hours on Monday, Aug. 5.

Police arrested Rita Pangalangan, 49, and Larry King, 41, in connection with the girl’s death.

In a news release, the Colleton County Sheriff’s Office said that investigators responded to a report of a child locked in a hot car 60 miles outside of Charleston.

Investigators found a 13-year-old girl lying on the ground next to the car. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Both suspects are at the Colleton County Detention Center. Pangalangan works in early childhood education for the Colleton County School District and has been placed on paid leave, according to district spokesman Sean Gruber.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division has been called to further investigate the incident.
