A 13-year-old boy has died hours after he collapsed during football practice in western Michigan on Wednesday, Aug. 28, police said.
Saranac Community Schools seventh-grader Skylar Lasby, collapsed Wednesday evening during a non-contact drill and was taken to Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital where he was pronounced dead, school and hospital officials said.
The cause of the young boy’s death was not immediately available. It also wasn’t immediately clear if the weather was a factor, though temperatures were a mild 68 degrees and humidity was low during the practice.
Schools Superintendent Jason Smith said in a released statement as below:
“With a heavy heart Saranac Community Schools is mourning the loss of one of our very own 7th graders. The student passed away late last night at the hospital, after a medical emergency during the Saranac Community Youth Football practice.
Supports are available at the school from local counseling agencies and school districts. Supports will be in place district-wide for as long as needed.
Most importantly, please keep the family in your thoughts as they work through this difficult time. Please also keep our students, staff, and community in your thoughts as well.”
District officials said counseling and other resources are available for staff and students as needed.
