A federally appointed legal professional condemned the head of a group, which is responsible for overseeing intelligence and U.S. government programs, for allegedly lying and spreading falsified documents.
White House Counsel Pat Cipollone used his opening speech at the Senate’s impeachment trial of President Donald Trump to criticize House Intelligence Committee Chairman Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) for making false statements and spreading manufactured telephone transcripts to advance his political career.
“Let us remember how we all got here, they made false allegations about a telephone call,” Cipollone said on a video the Daily Wire uploaded to Facebook. “When Mr. Schiff saw that his allegations were false, and he knew it anyway, what did he do? He went to the House and he manufactured a fraudulent version of that call, he manufactured a false version of that call, he read it to the American people, and he did not tell them it was a complete fake.”
The counsel said Schiff was always treated with “transparency” and received two declassified transcripts of President Trump’s telephone conversations with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy.
“The president of the United States declassified that telephone call and released it to the public, how’s that for transparency?” Cipollone said. “When Mr. Schiff found out that there was nothing to his allegations … he and his colleagues made false allegations about that second telephone call that occurred before the one he had demanded, so the president of the United States declassified and released that telephone call. Still nothing.”
He believes President Trump’s decision to release two classified telephone transcripts is unprecedented.
“Again, complete transparency in a way but frankly I am unfamiliar with any president of the United States releasing a classified telephone call with a foreign leader,” Cipollone said.
He also described the way House Democrats ran the impeachment proceedings without allowing the president or his lawyer to attend initial hearings as something that has happened “never before in the history of our country.”
“In every other impeachment hearing the president has been given minimal due process,” Cipollone said. “Nothing here, not even Mr. Schiff’s Republican colleagues were allowed into the Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility.”
The counsel also questioned the conduct of House Democrats who allegedly leaked information that was out of context and bullied federal employees into testifying.
“Witnesses were threatened; good public servants were told that they would be held in contempt, they were told that they were obstructing,” he said. “What does Mr. Schiff mean by obstructing? He means that unless you do exactly what he says regardless of your constitutional rights then you are obstructing.”
