Pittsburgh Steelers running back James Conner is out for Sunday’s game in Oakland because of a sprained left ankle.
Conner, who is second in the NFL with 12 rushing touchdowns, suffered the injury in the fourth quarter of a 33-30 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers.
The team initially described Conner’s injury as a leg contusion, but coach Mike Tomlin says the injury turned out to be more serious than originally thought.
The Steelers will turn to Stevan Ridley and rookie Jaylen Samuels when they face the Raiders. Pittsburgh also promoted running back Trey Edmunds from the practice squad to add some depth. Edmunds’ younger brother, Terrell, is a rookie safety for Pittsburgh.

The team also placed wide receiver Justin Hunter on injured reserve. Hunter injured his shoulder diving for an overthrown pass by quarterback Ben Roethlisberger against the Chargers.
