HUNTINGTON — Huntington High held off Huntington St. Joe, 2-0, in a Wednesday night boys soccer match at the Huntington YMCA Kennedy Center.

St. Joe played catch up for most of the match, and couldn’t pull even with the Highlanders.

Sal Saulle’s goal at 10:43 put Huntington High (12-5-1) up 1-0. Saulle was set up on a pass by Foster Jones; Saulle put the ball in the back right corner of the St. Joe goal.

The Fighting Irish (6-8-1) managed shots on the goal late in the first half and limited Huntington High’s possessions in the second half.

Jordan Walker pushed the Fighting Irish further behind by adding another goal for the Highlanders midway through the second half.

Walker took possession at midfield and pushed his way through the St. Joe defense until he found himself one-onone with Fighting Irish goalkeeper Deuce Vance. Walker dribbled into the box and sent a shot high over the outstretched hands of Vance to get the goal.

“We really did a good job of getting possession time tonight,” Vance said. “They really have a good centerback in Perrin Schray. He did a good job of cleaning up back there.”

Vance said the inter-city rivalry did little to set the Fighting Irish back. He said the team would keep working to improve for sectional play and an anticipated matchup with Winfield.

For Huntington High, the match was a tuneup for a 7:30 p.m. Wednesday contest at Hurricane for the Mountain State Athletic Conference championship.
