The arrest of a top opposition leader in Venezuela unleashed fears of a wider crackdown, even as members of the opposition issued renewed calls for weekend protests in their campaign to oust President Nicolás Maduro.

Paraguay declared a state of emergency in a province along the border with Argentina as torrential rains continued to swell rivers and cause floods. About 40,000 Paraguayans have been forced to evacuate their homes.

In Argentina, a lawmaker was seriously injured and a provincial official killed in one of the most brazen political attacks in the South American country since it returned to democracy in 1983.

Gunfire during a riot in a Guatemala prison left at least seven inmates dead and 10 wounded. National Civil Police said the dead were all prisoners at the Pavon Rehabilitation Model Farm in the municipality of Fraijanes.

The Houston Astros broke out the bats in a big way, routing the Los Angeles Angels 14-2, in the opener of a two-game series in Monterrey, Mexico. Major League Baseball has committed to bring games south of the border until 2021.

Rocker Alice Cooper closed the first edition of the Domination Music Festival in Mexico City with a concert that included his classic straitjacket routine, a guillotine and many costume changes. Cooper shared the stage with Slask, Kiss, Limp Bizkit, Apocalyptica and Dream Theater.

Eva Perón, who was raised poor, barely educated and scorned as illegitimate, has become one of the most famous women in modern history. On Monday the childhood home of “Evita”, which has been turned into an interactive museum, opened its door to the public.
