Scranton Prep is playing motivated and determined football. Stung by a loss to Valley View in Week 4, the Cavaliers’ focus was sharp during a 6-0 finish, where they steamrolled opponents on the way to the District 2 Class 3A playoffs. On Saturday, top-seeded Scranton Prep (9-1) hosts No. 8 GAR (1-9) at 2:30 p.m. at Scranton Memorial Stadium. During the wining streak, Scranton Prep is averaging 40.7 points per game. “One of the main goals is to win a district championship and go to states again,” Scranton Prep linebacker Jakob Kenny said. “We have been saying that ever since last year when we started lifting. We really want to win again, and get to states and go further if we can.” Scranton Prep has dominated Class 3A since winning its first title in 2015. In six playoff games, the Cavaliers outscored their opponents, 249-44. This year’s team is led by quarterback Leo O’Boyle, who has 1,633 yards passinf and 24 touchdowns. The Lafayette basketball commit is 22-2 as a starter and has 3,176 yards and 46 touchdowns in two seasons. Ryan Cosgrove has 1,125 yards rushing, but sat out Week 10 with an injury. In his absence, Tucker Johnson, normally the leader of the defense, ran for 167 yards and two touchdowns in two games. Scranton Prep has a physical line, led by Dan Belardi, T.J. Holmes and Robert DiBileo. In addition to Johnson, linebackers Matthew Para and Kenny are the heart of a defensive unit that yields only 166 yards per game. GAR is coming off an emotional regular-season game where it lost to rival Meyers, 21-14. That was the final game between the two schools as the programs will join Coughlin to form Wilkes-Barre Area next season. Quarterback Kam Taylor leads the Grenadiers with 1,003 yards passing and 14 touchdowns. Malachi Williams has 28 receptions for 464 yards and three scores. Justice Lomas has 358 yards rushing. “I think as a whole, we are focused on knowing they always have athletes and to not look at their record, but look at their athletes,” Kenny said. “The film shows you they have speed and they have athletes and they will play inspired.”
