Educated at Harvard (summa cum laude) and in Asia where he lived for four years before returning to Harvard. He previously taught at Princeton University, the U.S. Naval War College (Newport, RI) and Brown University.

Original member of the Congressionally-mandated U.S-China Economic and Security Review Commission (2001-2003).
