Democratic leaders walked away from the negotiating table Thursday in the midst of a government shutdown over funding for border security, a senior White House official tells The Daily Caller.

Democratic Party leadership had reportedly informed the White House that they are not interested in striking a deal at this time.

“Democrats are more concerned with keeping a Nancy Pelosi speakership” than with reopening the government, the White House official said.

The new development all but confirms that the government will remain shut down through the New Year — until Democrats take over the House and current House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi gets confirmed as Speaker. House Republicans confirmed on Thursday that there are no votes scheduled for the remainder of the week.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders accused Democratic lawmakers of walking away from a potential deal to end a partial government shutdown, in a Thursday afternoon statement.

“The Administration understands this crisis and made a reasonable, common-sense solution to Democrats five days ago – we’ve not received a single response,” Sanders declared. “The President and his team stayed in Washington over Christmas hoping to negotiate a deal that would stop the dangerous crisis on the border, protect American communities, and re-open the government.”

The press secretary accused Democratic lawmakers of not taking the situation seriously saying, “the Democrats decided to go home. The only rational conclusion is that the Democrat party is openly choosing to keep our government closed to protect illegal immigrants rather than the American people.”

Democratic lawmakers and President Trump are locked in a standoff over the president’s demand for roughly $5 billion for border security including a wall or barrier on the southern border, with 25 percent of the federal government shut down in the meantime.

President Trump on Thursday criticized Democrats blocking funds for a border wall, as the spending dispute kept the government partially shuttered for a sixth day.

“‘Border Patrol Agents want the Wall.’ Democrat’s say they don’t want the Wall (even though they know it is really needed), and they don’t want ICE,” the president tweeted.

He said their anti-border security stance would backfire.

“They don’t have much to campaign on, do they? An Open Southern Border and the large scale crime that comes with such stupidity!” he tweeted.

Trump continued: “The reason the DACA for Wall deal didn’t get done was that a ridiculous court decision from the 9th Circuit allowed DACA to remain, thereby setting up a Supreme Court case. After ruling, Dems dropped deal – and that’s where we are today, Democrat obstruction of the needed Wall.”
