Deputy Assistant Secretary of state for European and Eurasian Affairs George Kent assured the congressional committee investigating the case of Ukraine that it was the Obama administration that demanded the dismissal of the Ukrainian prosecutor general and not the international community.
During a 10-hour closed-door session, Kent working on Ukraine’s portfolio testified that it was the government of former President Barack Obama that pushed in 2016 for the removal of Ukrainian Prosecutor General Viktor Shokin, a source told The Federalist.
Some Democratic presidential candidates have come out in Biden’s defense claiming that it was the international community that was asking for the prosecutor general’s resignation, yet Kent denied this.
Kent clarified that both the International Monetary Fund and the EU were simply respectful of U.S. decisions in this matter.
State-owned Burisma Holdings hired Joe Biden’s son Hunter just after Obama put his father in charge of Ukraine in 2014.
With no experience in either the energy sector or the Ukrainian market, Hunter Biden was appointed to the energy giant’s board of directors and assigned a salary of $50,000 a month.
Shokin was investigating Burisma when Biden threatened then-Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko with withholding $1 billion in aid to his country if he did not fire Shokin.
“I looked at them and said: ‘I’m leaving in six hours,'” Biden recalled. “If the prosecutor is not fired, you’re not getting the money. (…) He got fired. And they put in place someone who was solid at the time,” referring to Yuri Lutsenko, The Hill explained.
Kent also testified that concerns about corruption within Burisma, where Hunter Biden served as a highly paid board member for five years, were openly expressed long before Trump became president, according to The Federalist.
In fact, Kent noted that as early as 2016 he himself alerted his department to of an event organized between the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and Burisma that involved children, something Kent found troubling.
