Former President Donald Trump admitted that he was woefully wrong when he appointed “woke” Gen. Mark Milley to chair the White House Joint Chiefs of Staff.
Speaking on Newsmax TV’s Greg Kelly Reports on Wednesday, Aug. 18, Trump said that Milley exposed his “gross incompetence” under the Biden administration following the U.S. troop withdrawal from Afghanistan and the subsequent Taliban takeover of the U.S.–backed Afghan government.
“Look at what he’s done,” Trump said, “he took the military out before he got the civilians out, before he got U.S. citizens out, so that would show gross incompetence.”
Trump explained that he chose Milley as the chief military adviser after seeing former Defense Secretary Jim Mattis, who was fired by Trump, come out adamantly against Milley.
“I said, ‘if he hates Milley that much, maybe the guy will be all right,” Trump said, admitting that he took a failed gamble on Milley.
“But in retrospect, I would not have made that decision again,” the former commander-in-chief said.
Regarding Mattis, the former president said that his administration worked better without the “Mad Dog” general.
“We did a great job without Mattis,” he said. “Once I got rid of Mattis, we took over—we knocked out ISIS and everything else.”
In the interview, Trump also blasted Milley as “a loser,” regarding the Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman’s statement in June 2020 when Milley said it was his “mistake” to accompany the then-president on a walk to historic St. John’s Church for a photo-op earlier that month.
“When he went and took that walk, and then he apologized because the radical left started getting on him, I realized I had a loser,” Trump said.
“I paid very little respect to him. He wasn’t very good. So I am not a fan of his,” Trump said.
In his first post-election Save America rally on June 26 in Wellington, Ohio, Trump also slammed Milley after the now chief military adviser to President Joe Biden defended critical race theory education in the armed forces.
“When you take a look at schools and you look at all of the things that happen, left-wing indoctrination camps, critical race theory is being forced on our military,” Trump said.
“Our generals and our admirals are now focused more on this nonsense than they are on our enemies,” he said, adding that “Our military will be incapable of fighting and incapable of taking orders.”
