Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was accused of defamation by the lawyers for the Democratic representative and presidential candidate Tulsi Gabbard.
The basis for the accusation was Clinton’s comments last month that Gabbard—from Hawaii—is the Democratic presidential candidate “preferred by Russia.”
Gabbard’s lawyers are now asking Clinton to withdraw her statement publicly, including on Twitter, according to a letter published Monday by Gabbard’s campaign.
“Your statement is defamatory, and we demand that you retract it immediately,” Gabbard’s lawyers said in the letter, The Hill reported.
During an interview in October Clinton said:
“And I’m not making any predictions, but I think they [Russia] have got their eye on somebody [Gabbard] who is currently in the Democratic primary and are grooming her to be the third-party candidate,” Clinton said.
She said the goal of the operation would essentially be to divide the U.S. electorate and help President Donald Trump win re-election.
“She’s the favorite of the Russians, they have a bunch of sites and bots and other ways of supporting her so far,” Clinton added.
Gabbard replied very angrily on Twitter, calling her “the queen of warmongers.”
“You, the queen of warmongers, embodiment of corruption, and personification of the rot that has sickened the Democratic Party for so long, have finally come out from behind the curtain. From the day I announced my candidacy, there has been a concerted campaign to destroy my reputation. We wondered who was behind it and why. Now we know, it was always you, through your proxies and … powerful allies in corporate media and war machine, afraid of the threat I pose. It’s now clear that this primary is between you and me. Don’t cowardly hide behind your proxies. Join the race directly,” Gabbard said in 3 tweets.
Gabbard has repeatedly denied that she would form a third party if she fails to win the Democratic nomination. Currently she has little chance of passing. She also said she will not run for re-election to the House in 2020.
As part of the great intern in the Democratic Party, in a video posted on Twitter, Gabbard assures that former Secretary Clinton’s grudge comes from 2016, when she decided to support socialist Sen. Bernie Sanders in his presidential career, turning her back on Clinton.
Hillary & her gang of rich, powerful elite are going after me to send a msg to YOU: “Shut up, toe the line, or be destroyed.” But we, the people, will NOT be silenced. Join me in taking our Democratic Party back & leading a govt of, by & for the people! https://t.co/TOcAOPrxye pic.twitter.com/TahfE2XOek
