Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) unloaded on the Obama administration in an interview on Fox News on Tuesday, Jan. 7, saying that the missiles Iran fired at Iraqi bases housing U.S. troops were paid for by the billions of dollars former President Barack Obama gave to Tehran in 2016.

“If you look at Iran policy I think you’ve seen a dramatic shift,” Cruz said of President Trump’s stance toward Iran, reported the BizpacReview.

“Under Barack Obama, the policy was appeasement. The policy under the disastrous Iran nuclear deal under Obama was to give over $100 billion to Iran,” he continued. “They literally flew $1.7 billion in cash, in unmarked bills on pallets in the dead of night, into Iran.”

“In a very real sense, the missiles that we saw fired on U.S. servicemen and women tonight were paid for by the billions that the Obama administration flooded the ayatollah with and if history teaches anything its don’t give billions of dollars to people who hate you and want to kill you,” Cruz said.

Cruz said that Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani—the head of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ Quds Force who was killed by the U.S. strike last week “was the most dangerous terrorist in the world” and the decision to take him out keeps America safe.

Cruz, however, stressed that we are “not going to get into an extended land war in the Middle East,” adding that he commended President Trump for “following principles of peace through strength.”

Cruz added that we needs to “stand up to the Ayatollah Khamenei,” whom he described “a radical religious zealot” who hates America.

He literally chants ‘Death to America’ and he calls Israel the ‘little Satan’ and America the ‘great Satan.’ The way to deal with threats like that is not through weakness, but through strength and we saw that in taking out Soleimani this past week,” he said.

Cruz said that the biggest national security threat facing the United States is the threat of nuclear weapons developed by Iran.

“A theocratic lunatic should not be allowed to acquire nuclear weapons. We stopped funding it. We stopped the deal flooding them with billions. But we need to be absolutely unequivocal that he [Ayatollah Khamenei] will not get nuclear weapons,” he said.

Earlier this week, Cruz joined Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) and Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) to call on the Trump administration to revoke Iran’s nuke waivers and restore international sanctions on the country.
