Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) has asked House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) to “stop playing games with the Constitution” over her withholding the articles of impeachment, promising the Republican-led Senate “will dispose of this sham created by the House.”

The House passed the impeachment articles against President Donald Trump last week, but Pelosi is sitting on them to seek more favorable terms in the Senate proceedings. In a tweet on Monday, Dec. 23, the speaker argued that the House Democrats could not appoint impeachment managers until the Senate satisfies their terms of a possible trial.

“The House cannot choose our impeachment managers until we know what sort of trial the Senate will conduct,” Pelosi tweeted, and claimed that President Trump blocked his own witnesses and documents from the House.

In a response, Graham—chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, called Pelosi’s actions “an affront to the Constitution.”

“This Constitutional outrage by @SpeakerPelosi needs to end,” Graham replied directly to the House speaker. “She is trying to run the Senate and deny President @realDonaldTrump his day in court after the House’s sham impeachment process.”

Graham then asked Pelosi to “stop playing games with the Constitution.”

“In our system, you can’t be the Speaker of the House and the Senate Majority Leader at the same time,” Graham said, adding, “The Senate will decide how we dispose of this sham created by the House.”

Turning to the GOP caucus, Graham urged the Senate Republicans to take action if Pelosi does not send over the articles of impeachment in a timely manner.

“If this continues into 2020, the Senate needs to strike back, standing up for our rights and ending this debacle,” he said.

“Democrats are treating impeachment as an open bar tab,” Graham continued. “Time to cut them off, take their car keys away (put GOP in control of the House), and end this insanity.”

President Trump on Monday renewed his attacks at the speaker, tweeting, “Nancy Pelosi, who has already lost the House & Speakership once, & is about to lose it again, is doing everything she can to delay the zero Republican vote Articles of Impeachment. She is trying to take over the Senate, & Cryin’ Chuck is trying to take over the trial. No way!”

In a reply to the president, Graham urged Pelosi to “fish or cut bait” and “commit to sending the Articles of Impeachment to the Senate consistent with Constitutional obligations.”

“If she refuses,” Graham added, “Senate Republicans should take matters into our own hands. We are in charge of the Senate—not Pelosi or Schumer.”

“Speaker Pelosi’s actions are an affront to the Constitution, the Senate, and denies President @realDonaldTrump his day in court,” Graham stressed.

Graham suggested, “this case should mirror the process used in the Clinton impeachment and should come to an end in weeks, not months.”
