House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) sent a letter Friday to National Intelligence Director Dan Coats requesting supervision of Attorney General William Barr’s declassification of papers used to investigate the 2016 presidential election.
At Barr’s request, as part of his investigation, Trump gave him declassification authority over intelligence agencies.
The White House May 23 memo states that the president has “directed the intelligence community to quickly and fully cooperate with the attorney general’s investigation into surveillance activities” and has “delegated full and complete authority to declassify information pertaining to this investigation.”
In the letter, Schiff accuses Trump and Barr of using the investigation to “politicize the IC and law enforcement, to delegitimize a well-founded investigation into the president, and to attack the president’s political enemies.”

The three page letter from Schiff demands:
- A meeting with Coats to be told what Barr has asked for and what has been provided so far
- Copies of everything the intelligence agencies turn over to Barr
- Prior notification of any declassification by Barr
- Any declassification made or about to be made by Barr over intel community objections along with assessments of potential harm to national security
President Trump and other Republicans have long suggested that the Russia investigation was improperly started by FBI agents biased against Trump in 2016.
Sen. Lindsay Graham (R-N.C.) stated in an interview that a classified document within the FBI shows that the Bureau knew Steele’s dossier was politically motivated and that it lacked independent corroboration.
“The bottom line is that the dossier has never been independently confirmed. It was used to get a warrant [by the FBI]. They knew the author of the dossier was on the Democrat Party payroll. There’s really no verification, other than media reports that were generated by reporters that received the dossier.”
