A judge ordered President Trump to pay $2 million in fines for misusing his charity foundation funds.
President Donald Trump, on Thursday, Nov. 7, fired back at the ruling to fine him “for misusing charity foundation,” calling it an attack by “the political hacks in New York State” and saying, “No wonder why we are all leaving!”
New York state Judge Saliann Scarpulla imposed the penalty on Thursday and ordered President Donald Trump to pay $2 million to an array of charities as “a fine for misusing his own charitable foundation to further his political and business interests.”
President Trump allowed his presidential campaign staff to coordinate with the Trump Foundation in holding a fundraiser for veterans during the run-up to the 2016 Iowa caucuses. The foundation will be dissolved, and its $1.7 million in remaining funds will be given to other nonprofits, under agreements reached by Trump’s lawyers and the attorney general’s office. As part of those agreements, made public Thursday, the two sides left it up to the judge to decide what penalty Trump should pay.
Trump and his lawyers have blasted the lawsuit as politically motivated, and he tweeted, “I won’t settle this case!” when it was filed in June 2018.
The president released a statement on Thursday night, saying “The New York Attorney General is deliberately mischaracterizing this settlement for political purposes.”
“In fact, the court rejected the Attorney General’s frivolous request for statutory penalties, interest and other damages,” he added.
Trump Foundation lawyer Alan Futerfas said the nonprofit has distributed approximately $19 million over the past decade, including $8.25 million of the president’s own money, to hundreds of charitable organizations.
Following is the full text of Trump’s statement:
STATEMENT FROM PRESIDENT DONALD J. TRUMP
I am the only person I know, perhaps the only person in history, who can give major money to charity ($19M), charge no expense, and be attacked by the political hacks in New York State. No wonder why we are all leaving!
Every penny of the $19 million raised by the Trump Foundation went to hundreds of great charitable causes with almost no expenses.
The New York Attorney General is deliberately mischaracterizing this settlement for political purposes.
In fact, the court rejected the Attorney General’s frivolous request for statutory penalties, interest and other damages.
It has been 4 years of politically motivated harassment – first by lightweight AG Schneiderman, prior to his resignation for beating up women – then AG Underwood, who was impossible to deal with, and now AG Letitia James, who does not acknowledge that we gave 100% of the funds to great charities, but refuses to investigate the Clinton Foundation with all of its problems. All they found was incredibly effective philanthropy and some small technical violations, such as not keeping board minutes.
We resolved the case with the understanding that all money previously in the foundation has gone to charity. I am therefore happy to donate $2 million to the following worthy charities: Army Emergency Relief; Children’s Aid Society; City Meals on Wheels; Give an Hour; Martha’s Table, United Negro College Fund; United Way of Capital Area; and the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum.
