Just few days from suggesting she go back to her country, President Trump answered a question from a reporter about Rep. Ilhan Omar’s questionable marriage when he was departing the White House on Wednesday, July 18.

“There’s a lot of talk about the fact that she was married to her brother, I know nothing about it. I hear she was married to her brother. You are asking me a question about it, I don’t know, but I’m sure that somebody would be looking at that,” the president said.

This is the first time the president has made a public comment about Omar’s questionable marriage, an unproven accusation that she was married to her brother to skirt immigration laws.

The Star Tribune reported on June 23, 2019, “New investigative documents released by a state agency have given fresh life to lingering questions about the marital history of Rep. Ilhan Omar and whether she once married a man—possibly her own brother—to skirt immigration laws,” “The questions surfaced again this month in a state probe of campaign finance violations showing that Omar filed federal taxes in 2014 and 2015 with her current husband, Ahmed Hirsi, while she was still legally married but separated from Elmi.”

In addition, The Washington Examiner’s findings based on comprehensive reviews from a series of new documents suggest that Omar “was living with her current husband, Ahmed Abdisalan Hirsi, throughout her entire legal marriage to Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, contradicting the story she tells to explain her multiple marriages.”

According to Daily Caller News Foundation, in 2017 Omar swore under oath, that she hadn’t seen or had any contact with her legal husband of six years, Elmi, in order to have a “default divorce,” an unusual proceeding used where one spouse has disappeared and cannot be located.

Omar also claimed in a divorce request she had tried to look for Elmi unsuccessfully on social media. But in fact, he had been on Twitter since 2012 and Facebook since 2007 and is also on LinkedIn and other platforms, according to Daily Caller News Foundation.

According to the Star Tribune, Omar has long denied the allegation that Elmi is her brother. “Whether by colluding with right-wing outlets to go after Muslim elected officials or hounding family members, legitimate media outlets have a responsibility not to fan the flames of hate,” her spokesman said in a statement to the Star Tribune. “Continuing to do so is not only demeaning to Ilhan, but to her entire family.”
