Additional federal reinforcements will be sent to Oregon in a bid to ease civil unrest that has continued for months.
The U.S. Marshals Service is deploying a further 100 deputy marshals to downtown Portland, as local authorities continue to struggle with extreme “anarchist” protests since Minnesotan George Floyd died in custody on May 25.
More deputies started arriving in Portland on July 23, according to a leaked internal email obtained by Reuters. The Department of Homeland Security could deploy a further 50 U.S. Customs and Border Protection staff if needed.
The Oval Office confirmed federal agents who are currently in Portland will focus their efforts on preventing public property from being destroyed and vandalized.
“In Portland, we are protecting federal property, including the courthouse, which would not last a day [without federal assistance,]” President Donald Trump said on Twitter.
The remarks came just days after the White House revealed activists have become “increasingly aggressive” and repulsive in what appears to be well-organized attacks.
“Individuals have thrown bricks, chunks of concrete, glass bottles, feces, balloons filled with paint, pig’s feet, [and used] slingshots to hurl ball bearings and batteries at federal agents and the courthouse,” press secretary Kayleigh McEnany said in a statement.
Protesters have allegedly tried to trap and injure frontline workers inside the court building on South West Third Avenue.
“Multiple attempts to barricade officers in the Hatfield Courthouse have occurred [and] attempts to start the structure on fire as well,” McEnany said. “Use of eyesight-damaging laser devices have been used, and strobe lights against federal agents as well but, according to [House] Speaker [Nancy] Pelosi, when asked about the violent removal of statues, [she said] ‘People will do what they do.’”
The president believes mainstream media outlets have misleadingly portrayed the group’s actions as peaceful when they are quite the opposite.
“The fake news media is trying to portray the Portland and Seattle ‘protesters’ as wonderful, sweet, and innocent people just out for a little stroll,” he said on Twitter. “Actually, they are sick and deranged anarchists and agitators who our great men and women of law enforcement easily control but who would destroy our American cities.”
He encouraged all registered voters to support law and order by voting for the Republican Party at the general election on Nov. 3.
“If ‘sleepy’ Joe Biden, the puppet of the left, ever won, markets would crash and cities would burn,” he said. “Our country would suffer like never before. We will beat the [CCP] Virus, soon, and go on to the golden age—better than ever before.”
