Pete Buttigieg, a Democratic candidate for the presidency, said in a recent interview with the Des Moines Register that drug possession should not be a jailable offense, even if it involves any illegal drug, including ecstasy or methamphetamine.

Buttigieg said that catching a person in possession of drugs resulted in a major problem, claiming that it harmed the development of children who were separated from their parents.

“We have kids in South Bend who have grown up with the incarceration of a parent as one of their first experiences. That makes them dramatically more likely to wind up themselves having an encounter with the criminal legal system,” Buttigieg said.

Buttigieg stated that he had always been skeptical of “mass incarceration,” emphasizing that now more than ever there was a need to “take really significant steps to end incarceration as a response to simple possession—of illicit drugs.”

After Buttigieg finished making his arguments about drug possession and jail, one of the editors asked him, “So, if it’s meth or coke or ecstasy, any drug if it’s possession incarceration isn’t—.” To which Buttigieg responded, “That’s right.”

As CSN News points out, Joseph Buttigieg, Pete’s father, was a tenured professor at the University of Notre Dame who devoted much of his life to translating and editing three volumes of Prison Notebooks, a work written by the communist Antonio Gramsci.

Gramsci, of Italian origin, promoted communist ideas through culture, academia, the media, and the arts. Many of his ideas are reflected in today’s so-called progressivism, generally associated with left and center-left policies.

Similarly, Pete Buttigieg, who is openly gay, has emphatically supported and defended various progressive ideas such as abortion and the elimination of illegal immigrant control. This last measure, supported by the Democrats, has led to the creation of sanctuary policies that protect illegal aliens from prosecution under federal law in various U.S. cities.

However, many of the illegal aliens are people who have an open criminal record, which cannot ultimately be verified by the authorities.
