House Speaker Nancy Pelosi referred to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell as “Moscow Mitch” during a speech, echoing MSNBC anchor Joe Scarborough.
The California Democrat was the keynote speakers at Wednesday’s Illinois Democratic County Chairs’ Association brunch. The annual affair kicked off Governor’s Day at the Illinois State Fair .
Pelosi referred to him by the derisive “Moscow Mitch” with which detractors have labeled him.
″‘Moscow Mitch’ says that he is the Grim Reaper. He’s going to bury all this legislation,” Pelosi said. “Well, we have news for him. All this legislation is alive and well in the general public.”
“We must pass gun violence prevention legislation. Every day we lose lives,” she said.
MSNBC host Joe Scarborough and others have vehemently denounced Sen. Mitch McConnell’s decision not to pursue election-security legislation amid revelations about the extent of Russian meddling in the 2016 election.
In late July, McConnell fired back on criticism over blocking election security bills from moving through the Senate by unanimous consent. McConnell pointed out the hundreds of millions already spent on election security and the “huge strides” that have already been made on improving it.
“Over the last several days, I was called unpatriotic, un-American, and essentially treasonous by a couple of left-wing pundits on the basis of bold-faced lies,” McConnell said. “I was accused of aiding and abetting the very man I’ve singled out as an adversary and opposed for nearly 20 years, Vladimir Putin,” according to Washington Examiner.
In her speech, Nancy Pelosi also exhorted thousands of Democrats to defeat Republican President Donald Trump and take control of the Senate in 2020.
