Democrats Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC), Ilhan Omar, and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi represent the nation’s “worst sanctuary cities,” according to a new Immigration Reform Law Institute (IRLI) ranking.
The legal organization specialized in immigration published on Tuesday, Sept. 24—the ranking of sanctuary cities with the highest crime rate in the country. The analysis was based on “crime statistics obtained by its investigations department and the details of particularly egregious crimes since each community adopted its sanctuary policies.”
Among the top three on this list are the districts represented by the three Democratic politicians, Pelosi for San Francisco, AOC for New York, and Omar for Minneapolis.
“This is a list of shame,” said Dale L. Wilcox, executive director and general counsel of IRLI.
“Political leaders who advocate for and defend sanctuary policies are directly responsible for the lawlessness and human suffering they have inflicted on their communities. The law-abiding, legal residents of these communities need to know that their leaders have prioritized the interests of often violent illegal aliens over them,” he added.
San Francisco – Nancy Pelosi
This sanctuary city was the scene of a crime that shook the entire country, the murder of young Kate Steinle shot by an illegal alien who had been deported five times, José Inés García-Zarate. The individual was found not guilty as he was considered to have fired the weapon “by accident.”
Another case highlighted by IRLI is that of a 23-year-old Honduran who was detained up to 10 times for various theft offenses. However, in each case, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) issued a detainer to the San Francisco Sheriff’s Department (SFSD) Jail, but the SFSD ignored all of them and the offender was released.
City authorities also denied the Department of Human Services (DHS) a request for the extradition of Mohamed Ben Azaza, a rape suspect, green card holder and Syrian citizen who fled to Canada.
Pelosi, who represents California’s 12th district in San Francisco, recently criticized ICE’s efforts to deport criminal aliens and asked, “In terms of interior enforcement, what is the purpose? What’s the point,” according to the statement.
When President Trump described the violent MS-13 gang members as “animals,” Pelosi replied: “There is a spark of divinity in every person on Earth.”
New York – Alexandra Ocasio Cortez
According to data collected by the legal organization, even though, under New York City law, police must turn over to ICE those aliens who have been convicted of one of 170 crimes listed as violent or serious within the last five years, which include such crimes as homicide, rape, and robbery, or turnover aliens listed on a terrorist database, NYC is not complying with its law in all cases.
“The New York Police Department (NYPD) and the New York City Department of Corrections (NYDOC) failed to honor over 1,900 ICE detainer requests, of which, almost 1,300 ICE classified as threat level 1 and 2 offenses,” the statement explains.
The New York Daily News also reported that from July 1, 2018 to June of this year, NYPD rejected another 2,900 ICE detainer requests.
Possibly as a result, shootings in the city increased by 27% in June over the same period last year.
It should be noted that Ocasio-Cortez, who represents the 14th district of New York City, called for the abolition of ICE and described border detention centers as “concentration camps.”
Minneapolis – Ilhan Omar
Minneapolis-St. Paul is home to approximately 100,000 Somalis, many of whom arrived as refugees in the 1990s, according to the report.
The report states that the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood in Hennepin County, also known as Little Mogadishu, has experienced a 56 percent increase in violent crime rate between 2010 and 2018.
The FBI has also detected in this area the highest number of alleged would be terrorists who attempted to leave the country to join the ranks of ISIS. In fact, in August two Somali refugees were arrested for providing material to the terrorist organization.
On the other hand, while the mayor of the city, Jacob Frey, says on the official website of the local government that the “Minneapolis Police have not and will not cooperate with, nor participate in, any such ICE activity,” records show that since June 2018 almost 9,000 Somalis with deportation orders are residing in the United States.
The IRLI report further noted that the Democratic representative of the city’s 5th district, Ilhan Omar, of Somali descent, attempted to intervene in the case of a group of six Somalis who in 2015 attempted to cross into Mexico as part of a plan to join ISIS in Syria.
Sanctuary policies often prohibit local authorities from cooperating with ICE agents when they request the deportation of illegal immigrants who have committed crimes.
Using a narrative of ‘compassion’ and ‘inclusion’, Democratic leaders are implementing policies that “release dangerous foreign nationals into communities, often resulting in violence and even death,” the organization denounces.
Wilcox thinks sanctuary policies “are absolute poison for America.”
“They are unconstitutional—a violation of the Supremacy Clause—and threaten the integrity of our republic. More importantly, sanctuary policies bring violent crime and murder that is entirely preventable,” the IRLI director added.
