House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) defended Elijah Cummings (D-Md.), on Saturday, July 27, after President Trump criticized the Baltimore district as far worse than the southern border.
“@RepCummings is a champion in the Congress and the country for civil rights and economic justice, a beloved leader in Baltimore, and deeply valued colleague,” she tweeted. “We all reject racist attacks against him and support his steadfast leadership.”

Earlier on the same day, President Donald Trump criticized Cummings twice, saying the Democratic lawmaker is doing nothing for his badly run Baltimore district.
President Trump called Cummings a “brutal bully” who has been “shouting and screaming at the great men & women of Border Patrol about conditions at the Southern Border, when actually his Baltimore district is FAR WORSE and more dangerous.”
The president is referring to a hearing last week when Cummings attacked Homeland Security chief Kevin McAleenan over the conditions of migrant detention facilities at the U.S.-Mexico border.
“Cummings’ District is a disgusting, rat and rodent infested mess. If he spent more time in Baltimore, maybe he could help clean up this very dangerous & filthy place,” President Trump wrote.
“Why is so much money sent to the Elijah Cummings district when it is considered the worst run and most dangerous anywhere in the United States. No human being would want to live there. Where is all this money going? How much is stolen? Investigate this corrupt mess immediately,” the president added.
Cummings reacted to Trump on Twitter, saying, “Mr. President, I go home to my district daily. Each morning, I wake up, and I go and fight for my neighbors. It is my constitutional duty to conduct oversight of the Executive Branch. But, it is my moral duty to fight for my constituents.”
“Just yesterday, I held a hearing on the skyrocketing prices of prescription drugs and the financial hardships that families across the nation, and in Baltimore, are facing,” Cummings added.
In a later tweet, President Trump ripped into the Democratic lawmaker, saying, “Cummings spends all of his time trying to hurt innocent people through ‘Oversight.’ He does NOTHING for his very poor, very dangerous and very badly run district!”
The president shared a video and asked the Representative of Baltimore district:

He also retweeted another video:
More trash. More concerned residents. People live in the home with the silver van. This is @RepCummings district. This has nothing to do with race. Let us all pray the city removes the trash & install cameras to catch the individuals dumping on the property. #WestBaltimore pic.twitter.com/CCaRH5c0aO

Before the president posted his first tweets on Thursday, a Fox TV show also aired a segment with Klacik calling Cummings’s district the “most dangerous” in the United States while showing shots of dilapidated buildings filmed by the strategist.
USA Today reported, citing FBI data, Baltimore had one of the highest homicide rates among major American metropolitan areas, with 56 homicides for every 100,000 people.
