Members of a political party that claims to represent the interests of African Americans were caught on video not clapping when a black female won a scholarship on Feb. 4.

Several Democrats failed to show their admiration for Philadelphia fourth-grade student Janiyah Davis when she won an Opportunity Scholarship that allows her to attend any school she likes.

A video of President Donald Trump’s State of the Union (SOTU) address shows a number of Democratic Party representatives reluctant to stand up and applaud Janiyah.

“Democrats remain seated as President Trump awards an ‘opportunity scholarship’ to [a] fourth-grader,” GOP Rapid Response Director Steve Guest said on Twitter. “Another stunning but unsurprising moment from Democrats during the SOTU.”

The remarks came after President Donald Trump announced more than a dozen states would allow students and their parents to choose which school to attend through the new “opportunity scholarships” program.

“For too long, countless American children have been trapped in failing government schools,” the president can be heard saying on a video uploaded to YouTube. “To rescue these students, 18 states have created school choice in the form of opportunity scholarships … [to make] sure that every young American gets a great education and the opportunity to achieve the American Dream.”

Davis was one of the tens of thousands of students who joined the waiting list for a scholarship but was adversely impacted by Pennsylvania Democratic Party Gov. Tom Wolf’s decision to reject new laws that would have allowed 50,000 children to choose which school they attend.

“Janiyah’s mom Stephanie is a single parent [and] she would do anything to give her daughter a better future but last year that future was put further out of reach,” the president said. “Janiyah, I have some good news for you … an opportunity scholarship has become available, it is going to you, and you will soon be heading to the school of your choice.”

He urged Congress to approve the proposed Education Freedom Scholarships and Opportunity Act to help 1 million children choose which school to attend.

“No parent should be forced to send their child to a failing government school,” the president said according to the Daily Wire. “Every young person should have a safe and secure environment in which to learn and grow.”

First Lady Melania Trump has separately championed her “Be Best” initiative to encourage youth to live a “safe, healthy, supportive, and drug-free life.”

“Thank you, Melania, for your extraordinary love and profound care for America’s children,” the president said.
