Kamala Harris, Democratic candidate for president, had to apologize for allowing and celebrating the words of a man who called President Donald Trump “mentally retarded” at one of her rallies.
During an event Saturday in Londonderry, New Hampshire, California Senator Kamala Harris was answering questions from the audience when a man asked:
“I’m afraid for this country. I’m afraid for people of color in this country,” said the man as seen in a video posted on Twitter by a disabled healthcare advocate.
“He has to be accountable for that. I mean, what are you going to do in the next year to diminish the action of this mentally retarded person,” he asked.
Kamala Harris, who at all times was listening and looking very closely at the man, laughed and replied, “Well said, well said,” and added, “I’m going to win this election, I’ll tell you that.”
The video caused a lot of outrage and rejection on social networks on both sides of the political spectrum.
“Using ‘retarded’ as a slur and an insult is never, EVER ‘well said,’ @KamalaHarris, no matter who it’s against and no matter the larger point being made. It’s ALWAYS a betrayal of the disability community,” said an activist who acknowledged that she is a Democratic voter.
“We need and expect better from you,” she added.
When asked about the incident by a CBS News reporter, Kamala Harris said she had not “processed” the comment.
“It wasn’t something I actually heard or processed, you know,” she said.
Harris also promoted her “long-standing relationship” with the “advocacy” of the disability community in the interview, never condemning the insult and degradation of the president’s image as reprehensible.
“When my team played the city council video yesterday, it was upsetting. I didn’t hear the words the man said at the time, otherwise, I would have corrected him. I’m sorry,” Harris said.
There are two options that could explain what happened. The first one is that she heard it perfectly and thought it was okay.
The second one is that she was not really listening to a man she was staring at as he was speaking.
Neither option says much for Kamala Harris, something Democratic voters seem to know, as her popularity has plummeted by half in recent weeks, according to Real Clear Politics.
