An elected official, who is responsible for ensuring the Democratic Party passes legislation in the House, appointed critics of the Trump administration to evaluate how a pandemic rescue package was rolled out.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) wants to spend more taxpayer money on establishing a new oversight committee to investigate why the Trump administration made little progress on implementing Chinese Communist Party (CCP) Virus relief legislation.
The House speaker announced Rep. James Clyburn (D-S.C.) would help co-chair the committee, including six fellow Democrats who have been highly anti-Trump. They include House Financial Service Committee Chair Maxine Waters (D-Calif.), House Oversight Committee Chair Carolyn Maloney (D.N.Y.), House Small Business Committee Chair Nydia Velázquez (D-N.Y.), Rep. Bill Foster (D-Ill.) and Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) plus Rep. Andy Kim (D-N.J.)
“The reason I announce this committee, this House select committee to address the coronavirus crisis [CCP Virus] is that we can in the hearing now address, as we go forward, with transparency and accountability,” she said a video obtained by Fox News’s “Fox and Friends.”
Pelosi claimed the committee would make sure stimulus funding is paid to the needy and that no business would profit greatly from the economic cash injection.
“We must be sure that the money we put forth goes to those who need it most, in a way that addresses disparities in access to health care and credit,” she said according to Fox News. “We also owe it to the American people to prevent waste, fraud and abuse, and to protect against price gouging and profiteering.”
She also suggested she would use the committee to make further amendments to proposed legislation, which is intended to provide relief to American businesses and households.
“As we respond to this unprecedented pandemic, there will be other opportunities for member participation, which have been suggested for inclusion in legislation,” she said.
However, Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) warned the Democrats are likely to make changes that have little to no benefit for those affected by the CCP Virus shutdown.
“What she [Pelosi] is proposing is what she was denied in the last bill, things that had nothing to do with coronavirus,” he told the “Fox and Friends.” “[This includes] the Green New Deal, changing election law [to allow postal voting,] bailing out states on pensions that have been spent incorrectly, spending more money to sanctuary cities—everything that does not deal with the coronavirus–Planned Parenthood.”
Debating these amendments will create lengthy delays in approving stimulus packages and the Oversight Committee will be used as another political weapon to attack President Donald Trump.
“This is not about oversight, it sounds like pure politics,” McCarthy said. “We have five different oversights already looking at this and this is what she comes up with? … She did not go with the oversight committee chair, her own, she appointed Clyburn. You remember what Clyburn said as her majority whip, he said that this is a time to restructure into their vision [of] government.”
House Speaker spokesman Henry Connelly claimed the latest Oversight Committee would save time and money.
“This bipartisan committee’s work will help save lives and taxpayer dollars in real time, not after it is too late to make a difference—and that is something everyone should welcome,” he said according to Fox News.
However, McCarthy believes it would be much faster to simply put partisan politics aside and work for the people.
“We need to implement the trillions of dollars that we just said that we passed,” he said. “Let us get to small business, let us get people continuing to work here, let us make sure we get that $140 billion out to hospitals who actually need it—our modern day soldiers in the medical community … [The latest package] would already be implemented today, if we would be talking about how we would be getting the money out had she not held the bill up earlier.”
