Democrat lawmakers introduced a resolution to prevent the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) from banning in-person access to abortion drugs on Aug. 19.

Led by House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairwoman Carolyn Maloney, Democrats urged the FDA to abandon regulations that require medical professionals to supply the abortion drug mifepristone to women in-person.

The proposal changes the previous Trump administration’s various restrictions on mailing abortion pills in the pandemic. It also moves away from historic regulations that require a doctor’s visit before any pregnant patient can buy abortion pills.

The Biden administration stopped enforcing the regulation in April 2021. Democrat leaders now want to completely eliminate the rule to prevent any future administration from restoring the regulation.

Politicians and public agencies want to abandon regulation on these types of abortion drugs. This would let chemical abortion pills become available without face-to-face medical consultation. It would also abandon their responsibility to protect women and girls from such highly dangerous drugs.

“Mifepristone is extremely safe, the FDA’s own data confirms this,” Maloney said in a statement. “It is time that we trust the science and ensure access to safe, legal abortion, particularly for communities where abortion care has been historically pushed out of reach.”

BL understands the FDA required laboratories to inform patients and the government about serious adverse effects mifepristone can cause for many years. However, in 2016 the former Obama administration directed the FDA to stop requiring labs to notify authorities about the drug’s non-fatal complications.

Resolution cosponsor Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Calif.) claimed the FDA’s safety regulation against abortion pills somehow makes terminating pregnancy less safe.

“For people already experiencing health disparities–including people of color, people with lower incomes, and people in rural communities–the FDA’s restrictions often push access to medication abortion out of reach,” she said according to The Hill.

Harrowing process

Abortion with the pill involves two stages according to Breitbart.

Firstly mifepristone must be taken to block progesterone, which the mother’s body produces to nourish pregnancy. Once blood and nutrition are cut off, the unborn baby dies inside the mother’s uterus.

The mother then takes misoprostol, which causes contractions and bleeding to expel the dead infant from the uterus.

This causes great suffering for the baby and risks infection, hemorrhaging or even death for the mother.

Pro-life advocates are concerned abortion pill sale liberalization will result in more coercion and abuse against expecting women who do not wish to terminate pregnancy.
