A Republican responsible for signing bills passed by the Texas Legislature deployed military reserves to keep the nation safe.

Gov. Greg Abbott has ordered the Texas National Guard to send 500 troops to the U.S.–Mexico border to prevent foreign criminals from entering the country.

“Texas is going to fight for the safety and security of our state,” he said, according to NewsMax. “We will work to step up and try to fill the gap that the federal government is leaving open by making sure we deploy every resource, whether it be Department of Public Safety or Texas National Guard—whatever we need to do.”

Abbott revealed the measure is necessary to “secure the border, apprehend dangerous criminals, and keep Texans safe” because President Biden is not doing enough to keep criminal aliens out of the United States.

“The Biden administration has created a crisis at our southern border through open border policies that give the green-light to dangerous cartels and other criminal activity,” he said in a statement. “Border security is the federal government’s responsibility but the state of Texas will not allow the administration’s failures to endanger the lives of innocent Texans.”

The governor’s office confirmed more than 800 criminal aliens were arrested since the beginning of 2021, including several sex offenders and gang members. Many individuals had previously been deported from the United States.

“Cartels are ramping up trafficking and smuggling along the border and overwhelming border patrol resources–a strategy of the organizations to bring more dangerous elements across the border including violent criminals, contraband, and individuals from special interest countries,” the office said.

He also accused the Democratic Party of “enriching the cartels” through introducing so-called open border strategies and even failing to provide vaccines to U.S. Border Patrol workers.

Abbott believes Biden should increase funding to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and give authorities enough resources and facilities to keep America safe.

Since the Democrats do not appear to be interested in doing so, the Lone Star State will have to “step in to fill the gap created by the federal government and protect our communities from criminal activities along the border.”

The governor and department previously launched Operation Lone Star, which deploys air, ground, marine, and tactical border security assets to “high threat areas.” This was intended to deny Mexican cartels and other smugglers the opportunity to transport drugs and illegal immigrants across the border.
