A controversial Republican senator strongly criticized his party leader’s actions in helping contain the deadly disease.
Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) used national television to condemn President Donald Trump’s response to the CCP (Chinese Communist Party) Virus.
The senator accused the president of not doing enough to shut down the national economy.
“Well, this has not been the focus of his rhetoric, apparently, and I think it is a great human tragedy, without question,” he told CNN “Situation Room” host Wolf Blitzer in a video shared on YouTube. “The extraordinary loss of life is heartbreaking—and in some respects, unnecessary. We have relaxed our standards as individuals.”
Romney also criticized the president for not denying individuals their right to decide whether to wear a face mask in public.
“Some states have not had mask mandates, and from Washington, we have not had a constant, consistent plan and plea for people to wear masks, to social-distance, to take all the measures that would reduce the spread of this disease,” he said. “It is unfortunate that this became a political issue; it is not political; this is public health.”
He revealed he would have made face masks mandatory across the nation if he was president of the United States.
“No question, unless you take this very, very seriously and communicate that this is not a political matter, this is not a matter of liberty, this is a matter of safety and public health,” he said. “We needed to have a far clearer message from the beginning that this was serious. We should take every possible step we could in order to constrain this virus’s spread. We have not done that, and we are suffering the consequences even today.”
Romney appeared to forget under President Trump’s leadership; the United States was one of the first developed nations to close its borders to travelers arriving from mainland China on Jan. 31.
Throughout the pandemic, the president has also encouraged all sides of politics to unite the nation to fight against the CCP Virus. He was also pivotal in fast-tracking research and development of a CCP Virus vaccine for distribution.
“We have a common enemy. Actually, an enemy of the world, the CoronaVirus [CCP Virus,]” President Trump said on Twitter. “We must beat it as quickly and safely as possible. There is nothing more important to me than the life and safety of the United States.”
