President Donald Trump has accused Senate Democrats of weakening U.S. law enforcement after they blocked a GOP police reform bill, leaving the legislation in limbo. The president hinted that the top 20 cities with the worst crime rates are all governed by Democrats.

The Senate voted 55 to 45 on the measure on Wednesday, June 24, The Hill reported. Two Democrats, including Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) and Sen. Doug Jones (D-Ala.), and one independent, Sen. Angus King (I-Maine), joined with Republicans, but they failed to reach the 60-vote threshold needed to advance the bill.

The Senate Democrats have criticized the Republican-drafted legislation as a toothless response to police brutality following the death of George Floyd after a police officer in Minneapolis pressed his knee into Floyd’s neck at the end of May. The incident sparked nationwide calls for law enforcement reforms.

In fact, a rival bill put forward by Democrats is expected to pass in the House this week, but Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) has also said it would be a nonstarter in the Senate.

Reacting to the police reform bill blocked in Senate, President Trump pointed to dozens of cities with the highest crime rates in the United States to say that they are all run by Democrats.

“The Senate Republicans want very much to pass a bill on police reform,” President Trump said in a press conference with Polish President Andrzej Duda at the White House on Wednesday. “I would like to see it happen. We won’t sacrifice. We won’t do that. We won’t do anything that is going to hurt our police.”

“We have a record positive rating on crime, a record positive rating on crime this year, the best,” he continued. “You hear about certain places like Chicago and you hear about what’s going on in Detroit and other cities, all Democrat-run. Every one of them is Democrat-run. The 20 worst, the 20 most dangerous are Democrat-run.”

According to research released in January from the Neighborhood Scout site, which provides comprehensive neighborhood crime, the top 20 dangerous cities in the United States are: Detroit (Mich.), Memphis (Tenn.), Birmingham (Ala.), Baltimore (.D.), Flint (Mich.), St. Louis (Mo.), Danville (IL), Saginaw (Mich.), Wilmington (Del.), Camden (N.J.), Pine Bluff (Ark.), Kansas City (Mo.), San Bernardino (Calif.), Alexandria (La.), Little Rock (Ark.), Cleveland (Ohio), Milwaukee (Wis.), Stockton (Calif.), Monroe (La.) and Chester (Pa.).

The Daily Signal has verified that those crime-ridden cities are run by 18 Democrat mayors and two mayors who were elected in nonpartisan races.

During the press conference on Wednesday, President Trump added, “The Democrats want to weaken very substantially our law enforcement, our police.”

“Frankly, they want to defund [police departments], at least largely. Some want to defund and abolish our police. If nothing happens with [police reform], it’s one of those things. We had different philosophies. They want open borders. They want sanctuary cities. We don’t,” the president said.
