Two Republican lawmakers have sent a letter demanding Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas turn over all documents that warned President Joe Biden of the possible consequences of reversing the Trump administration’s immigration policies.
In the letter dated Tuesday, March 30, Reps. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) and Tom McClintock (R-Calif.) asked Mayorkas to provide “all documents and communications” referring to or relating to the meetings between the DHS and the Biden transition team about the new administration’s immigration policy.
The lawmakers claimed that despite a worsening crisis in the southern border, “President Biden and his Administration refuse to accept responsibility for the growing humanitarian and security crisis.”
“This refusal to accept responsibility is startling in light of a news report that suggests the Biden Administration was warned that reversing President Trump’s successful immigration policies would lead to a surge at the border,” they wrote, as an explaination for their request.
The two said that the United States is on track to encounter the most significant number of illegal migrants on the border in the past 20 years. However, Biden has still refused to take any meaningful action to stop them. At the same time, he continued to peddle the false narrative that his policies are not the cause of the ongoing border crisis and attempted to shift blame to Trump.
Jordan and McClintock, ranking members on the Subcommittee on Immigration and Citizenship, cited a report from National Public Radio in which a DHS staff member had warned the Biden transition last fall against reversing the Trump administration’s immigration policies, saying it could risk another crisis at the border.
But “instead of heeding these warnings, President Biden signed several executive orders dismantling the Trump Administration’s immigration programs and policies,” the GOP lawmakers wrote.
Jordan and McClintock said they had given Mayorkas two weeks to provide all the related materials.
The letter comes after President Biden, during his press conference last week, described the border situation as normal, saying that, “Nothing has changed… It happens every single, solitary year.”
But a group of senators, including Sen. Cruz (R-TX.) and Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX.), took a tour of a migrant detention center in Donna, Texas. It exposed the border conditions that the Biden administration is concealing.
