A Republican will not force Floridians to stay at home because the measure is ineffective at stopping the deadly disease.

Gov. Ron DeSantis confirmed there will be no lockdowns because they repeatedly failed to contain the COVID-19 pandemic.

“These interventions have failed time and time again throughout this pandemic, not just in the United States but abroad [too,]” he said according to Breitbart.

The governor believes shutting down the Sunshine State is even less effective at preventing the more infectious Delta strain from spreading. This draconian measure also discourages people with symptoms from seeking health care because they fear contracting COVID-19.

“They have not stopped the spread and particularly with Delta, which is even more transmissible,” he said according to the publication. “If it did not stop it before, it definitely ain’t gonna stop it now.”

DeSantis’s refusal to resort to lockdowns and mask mandates quickly drew national and international attention. He will not back down even though the number of infections recently jumped due to the Delta variant.

“In terms of shutting down, we are not shutting down,” he said.

The Republican promised to make a priority of defending every Floridian’s right to education and live in prosperity without relying on government handouts.

“We are going to have schools open, we are protecting every Floridian’s job in this state, we are protecting people’s small businesses,” he said.

The governor rebuked mainstream media for blaming children who did not wear face masks for being hospitalized due to the virus.

“With all due respect, I find that deplorable to blame a victim who ends up being hospitalized,” he said. “You do not know their story; you do not know what happened with them.”

DeSantis hopes mainstream media coverage of the pandemic will be less “judgmental” and “negative” in future.

He also rejected any suggestion Florida hospitals are overrun, citing official state data that shows Delta variant infections plateauing. He vowed to keep medical centers “open for business.”

The remarks came after the Republican stressed his no lockdown policy at an American Legislative Exchange Council conference held the previous week.

“It is very important that we say unequivocally no to lockdowns, no to school closures, no to restrictions, and no to mandates,” he said at the time.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has warned about the danger of Delta strain infections. The agency revised its guidance for fully vaccinated people to wear face masks in regions where there is a high rate of COVID-19 transmission.
