Several Democrats have called on Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) to step down as House minority leader. They complained about him joking that about thumping the House speaker.

The Democratic Party wants McCarthy’s head to roll for trying to humor Tennessee Republicans. The congressman joked he would whack Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) with a novelty gavel after the GOP wins back control of the House in 2022.

“It will be hard not to hit her with it but I will bang it down,” he said according to Washington Post national political reporter Michael Scherer.

The House minority leader made the remarks after party delegates from the Volunteer State handed him the oversized gift, at the annual Tennessee GOP dinner on July 31. The gavel had the words “fire Pelosi” inscribed onto the hammer part.

More than 1,400 people attended the event in Nashville, where McCarthy expressed optimism about the Republicans seizing control of the House at the next election.

However, Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) did not find the joke funny at all, and accused the GOP leader of being Pelosi’s “would-be assailant.”

“America has suffered enough violence around politics,” he said on Twitter. “GOP Leader McCarthy is now a would-be assailant of Speaker Pelosi. He needs to resign.”

Rep. Ted Lieu (D-Calif.) wants McCarthy to apologize for his sense of humor.

“Don’t you think America has had enough political violence?” he said on Twitter. “You should never be encouraging or threatening or joking about causing violence to anyone, including the speaker of the House–you need to apologize for your statement or resign.”

Democratic Coalition co-founder Scott Dworkin also wants the GOP leader to step down for his witty remarks.

“Who else thinks Kevin McCarthy must resign for ‘joking’ about assaulting Speaker Pelosi?” he said on Twitter.

The same Democrats had surprisingly little to say about Pelosi’s recent insult that McCarthy was “such a moron” for opposing the reinstated House mask mandate.
