Senate Democratic Leader Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) said Tuesday, Sept. 10, that Democrats will force a Senate vote on a resolution to terminate President Trump’s border wall national emergency declaration.

Schumer said President Trump is “stealing” money from the military fund to construct the wall along the southern border and usurping the power “given exclusively to Congress by the Constitution.”

“The president’s national emergency declaration was, and is, an outrageous power grab by a president who refuses to respect the constitutional separation of powers,” he said. “We have never had a such a president overreach on an emergency basis.”

“The president has very clearly attempted to usurp the power of the purse,” Schumer continued. “The recourse for such a brazen power grab should be an overwhelming bipartisan vote in the Congress to terminate the emergency declaration and reassert our constitutional authority.”

The vote would be the second attempt by Democrats to block the president’s move, the previously forced vote was joined by a dozen Republicans.

The Pentagon announced on Sept. 4 that it will cut funding from military projects to pay for the construction of 175 miles of fencing along the U.S.-Mexico border, diverting a total $3.6 billion to the wall.

The president’s use of an emergency order for the wall sparked outrage from Democrats who promised they won’t approve money.

Schumer urged lawmakers from the two parties to vote to repeal the president’s plan, saying, “Who else will he take money from and use it for purposes that he wants but that Congress doesn’t and the American people are largely opposed to?”

However, contrary to what Schumer has said, polls showed opposition to the border wall is shrinking with 54% at the beginning of this year compared to 63% of the last year, according to the Washington Examiner.

David Catron, an American Spectator writer, after comparing the cost of building the barrier with the savings from health care system provided to illegal immigrants, came to agree with Andrew Sullivan who wrote “If We Want to End the Border Crisis, It’s Time to Give Trump His Wall.”

“The Democrats need to accept that they lost the last presidential election for a reason, and that their opponent’s main campaign pledge was to tackle illegal immigration,” Sullivan said.
