The Democratic Party rejected a Republican motion to condemn and censure House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff for his false retelling of the conversation between President Trump and Ukraine President Zelenskiy.
“Adam Schiff … has for two years said he had proof that the president colluded with Russians—that turned out to be false in the Mueller report. Then, made up … what President Trump said to the Ukrainian president, trying to deceive the American public,” Rep. Debbie Lesko (R-Ariz.), told Fox News.
“I imagine that the Democrats are going to kill the bill to censure Adam Schiff because this whole thing is a political hit job against the president,” she said, pointing out that the Democrats have launched a baseless witch-hunt against President Trump to try to ruin him.
As expected, each block voted along party lines and the vote was in favor of the Democrats (218-185), who, holding a majority in the lower house, rejected a resolution denouncing that Schiff “misled the American people” and “make a mockery of the impeachment process, one of this chamber’s most solemn constitutional duties.”
“Each member of Congress must uphold a high standard of honesty and integrity,” Republican House leader Kevin McCarthy said, according to Politico, after Democrats did not hold Schiff accountable for his actions.
“When it comes to matters of our national security, that responsibility is even greater,” he added. “Chairman Schiff has fallen short in his duty. By asserting that he had evidence of Russian collusion with Trump’s campaign to cover up his committee’s relationship with the whistleblower, he has demonstrated a pattern of lying to the American people about intelligence matters,” he described.
“The integrity of the House”
“I am disappointed that my Democrat colleagues failed to uphold the integrity of the House of Representatives by condemning the actions of Chairman Adam Schiff,” said Arizona Republican Andy Biggs, who presented the resolution against Schiff, in a statement quoted by AZ Central.
“An impeachment proceeding to remove a duly elected president is one of the most solemn decisions a member of Congress may be forced to make in their tenure. Instead of operating with integrity, Adam Schiff misled the American people about the content of the transcript being used to drive the most recent impeachment narrative against President Donald Trump.”
“Instead of quoting directly from the available transcript, Chairman Schiff manufactured a false retelling of the conversation between President Trump and President Zelenskiy,” Biggs continued.
“This egregiously false and fabricated retelling had no relationship to the call itself,” and “makes a mockery of the impeachment process,” he concluded.
“Adam Schiff may not have been held accountable tonight, but the American people are very much aware of his reckless disregard for the truth. They will not tolerate his calculated words and actions as he continues his secret impeachment inquiry to undermine the will of Americans,” he wrote shortly after the vote on his Twitter account.
